In 1993, Jurassic Park was an amazing visual effects breakthrough. Only a few years later, the advances in computer generated imagery first featured in Jurassic Park became almost commonplace, and so it is difficult to see it now as it was seen when it first opened. But as a suspense thriller with a keen sense of wonder, it endures: it is stunning, awesome, and terrifying.
True, there is not a lot of depth to the characters. Most of them are more caricatures than characters. But the movie works anyway, because it plays effectively on an innate human fear: what if we were not at the top of the food chain?
A great many scenes, particularly the T-Rex/jeep and Raptor/kitchen scenes, are masterfully crafted besides serving their basic functions of keeping the adrenaline level cranked. Yes, this is fluff material -- but it's darned good fluff.
