If you have older (ie. versions 1-2.x) they aren't supporting it any more, like you said. A similar option should still exist. Try following the directions above anywho (often they don't change locations for such things because people become familiar with them).
If that doesn't work, the best fall-back is the support that came with the software. Do you still have the manual? Even if not, there should be some in-program help with either a search feature (in which case you would search for "scratch disk") or an index (try looking under memory, disk space, hard disk, scratch disk, compression).
You also may wan't to increase your virtual memory. More than this, though, is that if you don't get the message any more, your best solution might be to save often and exit out of the program occasionally (which should clear the history). That could get annoying, though.
