Ebert does call him Trip. From Ebert's review:

"We meet some of the stars in the crossword world, including a former champ, Trip Payne, and 20-year-old Tyler Hinman, who is the kid to watch."

As far as I know, Trip's not an actor -- the movie is a documentary. But he does apparently know enough about movies he might as well be an actor.

P.S. Sorry Trip, if Wordplay gets nominated I'll still have to pick against it if there's a Holocaust documentary also up for the award.
