The sharpening part is HARD. So just to tell you how to do it would be a spoiler. Which will get deleted. So I'll try to break it down into hints:

1) If you did some reading in the library, you'll have picked up a book that said "the big cog makes the smaller cog spin faster" or something like that. (That, and by reading, you can find out where methanoic acid comes from...)
2) Second clue: the painting in the art room called The Knife Sharpener, which shows a metal cylinder being used to sharpen a knife.
3) You've seen a metal cylinder somewhere. In the same room as a food-fixated teacher.
4) But how do you get it to spin? Hey, wait, you have a SMALL cylinder and something else that's round and spins and is LARGER. If you connected them and started the big one moving...

Yeah, I know. I think that's the best I can do without going all the way over into full-out spoiling.
