The first thing to do is to explore the *rest* of level 2. And when you see any signs, don't trust them.
Look for a large area that features lots of monsters, and that will help you get down to level 3. If you have already been to this area, and you ignored the signs, then you should be able to move in more than one direction from your starting point on level 2.
