There is a certain security to driving a car like that. You don't worry about it being stolen. You don't worry too much about dents and scratches. It cost less to insure it. People assume that it is a dangerous, uninsured, menace driven by an irresponsible, person with no money, so they give you plenty of room.

My son, when he was about 19, decided he needed a "work truck" to haul his tools. So he spent $125 on a 15-year-old Dodge pickup that somebody had painted school-bus-yellow with a brush. It had a vast collection of dents and rattles and a wooden tailgate. After driving it a few days, he commented that he always seemed to have the right-of-way. Nobody ever crowded him. It actually was a fairly reliable old heap, and he kept it for almost two years.
