I'm going to tell this here because I have to tell somebody. A young man named Zack, and his girl friend where killed in a car crash the other night. I didn't know the 16 year-old girl, but Zack, 18, was the son of two of my former students. I also knew his grandparents on both sides. His grandmother taught in the same school building with me. His other grandmother and grandfather were active in the PTO when I was principal of a small school. We had worked together on a number of projects and I knew them very well.

Last summer, Zack and his father rode into my drive on Cushman motor scooters. They had recently learned that I was collecting Cushmans and they came over to see the collection. They stayed a couple of hours. Recently, his grandfather had bought a Cushman and was restoring it. I'm sure they planned scooter rides with three generations. I guess now it will never happen.

Zack graduated from high school less than a year ago. The girl friend was still a student. Naturally, things were rather quiet at the high school today. They lost another student a couple of weeks ago.

Life is tough. These things never get easy.
