I guess it just depends how much a purist you are.
Take my dad and basketball, for example. He loves the game. Loooooves the game. Doesn't matter who's playing. He'll watch pro, college, high school, men, women...doesn't matter. A good game is a good game to him, even if he's never heard of the teams or players. He appreciates the strategy, the clutch shooters, the fast breaks--whatever, and whenever.

The only ball game he won't keep watching is a one-sided landslide.

If I ask him who he's rooting for, his answer is usually, "no one in particular". Or, he'll say "whoever happens to be behind at the moment."
