secret room in GOA

This is my second game, and I still can't find the secret room. I've been running around in the endless passage, bottomless well and Gwuil's room for hours now, and no luck.
My inventory:

7 Red Gemstones
Stone of Strengthening
Torch
Hammer
Picture
1 Black Gemstone
Food Rations
Key of Opening
Map
Battle Plans
Guard's Sword
Tinderbox
Clear Focus Stone
Magnifying Glass
I also have the rink and horse waiting outside, obviously. I lost the rope at the valkyrie place. Am I too late to get to the room?

I'd really appreciate a hint, like the general area of the room, the number of times I have to repeat an action, whatever.
