And Sin City didn't look like it was shot through gauze, either. I think SC's problem was probably that it just looked too realistic. Until FP mentioned it I didn't even realize it had been shafted -- and it's my favorite movie of the year.
None of the digital effects look digital, but they also don't look particularly spectacular, either. They're absolutely wonderful, but they're very subtle and look completely realistic.
The real question is why it got shafted in cinematography (Batman Begins was better shot?), adapted screenplay, art direction and editing. I could also support a nod for costume design.
Sin City is hands-down the best looking film of the year. I didn't expect it to get nominated for anything, but it's still a shame.
