This year's theme of nominating newcomers bizarrely extents, with a caveat, into the Best Original Score category, traditionally the most...uh, traditional of Oscar categories. It's an insular group, the film composers. You tend to see people like Danny Elfman and James Newton Howard and James Horner showing up there year after year. But this year three of the five nominees are first-timers.

The caveat? Well, the other two nominees are John Williams.
