The Internet wasn't, but RinkWorks was. Before we moved to the web in 1997, we operated over the regular postal mail. People would send in posts to me, and I'd include them in a newsletter sent out to everybody at the end of the week, which also included updates to things like Really Bad Jokes and Radio Stupidities*. We had games, too. People would pair up and play chess or pen the pig or hangman one move at a time. Things go quicker since the move to the web, but something special was lost -- it used to be exciting when that weekly update envelope with the blue and red logo arrived in the mail. Now that we can check for updates any old time, it's just not the same.
