I've always felt like solar energy was the real deal. I recently ran across the old light-powerd calculator that I used when I was teaching. It is about 20 years old and I hadn't seen it since I retired in '93. It still works.
As far back as the 1940's when I lived in Florida, just about everybody's hot water was heated by solar collectors. It was usually just an box on the roof with black pipes in it. They would heat the water well over 160 degrees F.
Photovoltaics are like most electronic stuff. They started off expensive and are slowly getting cheaper. I assume they are also better than they were two or three decades ago. I think it won't be long until this space age stuff is on top of houses, cars, boats and trains everywhere. There is even a large array or two in the Dollywood parking lot. They do provide some shade for people waiting for the tram, but they also produce useful energy.
When I look at those big parking lots at shopping malls, I sometimes wonder why they don't shade them with solarvoltaic arrays. Howard
