a small world story

For years, I've been telling my wife that she still looks a lot like she did when I first met her. She always gives me that "Yeah, riiiiight," look. But this morning, a telephone call may have changed her mind.

I have to go back to when she was in 5th grade, long before I knew her. Her family moved about 20 miles, which was a long distance in the late 40's. The move meant a different school, a different house, and new friends.

Now fast forward to the present. Our picture ran in the Knoxville paper along with an announcement of our 50th anniversary. About 10 minutes from where we live now, a lady picked up that paper and said, "I know her." She said she recognized her before she even looked at our names under the picture. She was a classmate from that 5th grade class about 58 years ago. She said she got out a class picture and they were both in it. My wife's mom still has a copy of the same picture, and we will check it out when we are down there in a few days.

How many people change so little that they can be recognized 58 years later?

So they plan to meet for lunch soon, and discuss old times. They have been living within 4 or 5 miles of each other for the last 33 years. The school where the picture was made is about 120 miles to the west.

Small world stuff.
