Another idea would be to tape as many straws to the egg as you can, pointing every which way. No matter how the egg lands, you'll have a bunch of straws there to absorb the shock.
This method is pretty simple and lightweight, and you might even be able to stick it in a box filled with tissue paper/packing peanuts/whatever.
