I was a kid during WWII. Toys were not available for several years, so we played with sticks, rope, string, cardboard boxes and just about anything else that we found. There was no TV in those days, and we lived so far back in the mountains we couldn't even get radio, except at night.

A large pole with a cord on one end became a horse and a stick was a gun. So we played cowboy.

We built forts using everything from logs to snow. The whole neighborhood was a network of paths. Do kids walk enough to make paths these days?

We built dams and bridges in the creek, and sailed home made boats that were anywhere from inches to feet in length.

Four wheels and a plank made a coaster that we could ride down the street. Almost any wheels would do and sometimes they were different sizes. Riding in the street was not very dangerous, because cars got only 3 gallons of gas a week and nobody drove unless they had to.

We read anything we could get our hands on. Mostly it was comic books. People who grew up in those times are mostly great readers. We also learned to be creative. Not having toys and electronic gadgets will do that for you.

Sometimes I wonder if the time we spent gathering nuts and berries was recreation, or the lack of nutrition in the wartime diet.

I'm not really saying that growing up in those days was bad. I think it was just differrent.

I think I'll go out to the shop and make a slingshot out of that forked stick I found the other day.
