Favorite Things Quiz posted by Sam on Friday, December 2, 2005, at 16:58:01:
I've already taken the quiz, so these are just remarks:
> > What's your favorite shape to cut paper into?
Why hasn't some nut said a sphere? I think that would be a giggle. > > What's your favorite color of sand?
Sand comes in so many colors. The first time I ever saw black sand was at Kalapana, on Hawaii. The next year, a lava flow came along, wiped out the town and covered that black sand beach. There are black sand beaches on several of the Hawaiian Islands, but this one was the most beautiful. There were coconut palms all along the high tide mark.
Other beaches on the Big Island are red or green. The green comes from the mineral olivine, which is found in lava. Red lava weathers into brick red sand.
On Kauai, the sand is combination of red lava and white coral, so it comes out absolutely golden. On a few beaches there it looks almost pink.
In Florida and the Carolinas, beach sand tends to be very light colored, mostly beige or tan, but sometimes white.
White Sands New Mexico is really well named. The sand there is gypsum, a light soft material the blows and drifts like snow. Gypsum dunes look like snow drifts.
Much of the river sand in the Southern Appalachians is quartz containing enough iron to make it yellow or sort of orange. This is what probably tints the beaches along the coast.
Glacier sand is made from a variety of minerals, mostly those found in granite and basalt. Beaches on Cape Cod are made of course glacier sand. You can sit there and pick out bits of quartz, feldspar, olivine, and iron oxide. A magnifying glass makes it look like jewels.
> What's your favorite prime number?
Why didn't somebody pick a really large prime number? It would have been a good chance to show off math skills. > >
> What's your favorite country name no longer in official use? OK, Ok, Texas might have been a country for a few minutes, but it's a state now. > > What's your favorite musical note? > I wish I'd said "Psst. Meet me at my locker after music class."
> > What's your favorite color for a refrigerator? Orange? Pink? Lavender? Let's show a little originality here. > >> > What's your favorite key on a keyboard? > I wish I'd said "delete" or "escape" or something useful like that.
Oops. Supper time. I won't take time to proof this. Howard
