EGG DESTRUCTION!!!! <----Avoid at all costs posted by zK on Thursday, December 1, 2005, at 19:27:26:
I just filled a huge box with shredded paper and placed the egg about a third of the way down. I also weighted one corner of the box so that it would hit the ground first, thus, spreading out the time over which impulse acts and reducing the force exerted by the ground. I'm pretty sure this method requires more than 400g of material, though. Another guy in my class did something ingenious. He took a small cubic cardboard box (edge length about six inches) and cut out squares in its faces so that it was just a cubic frame with surfaces extending maybe a half or quarter inch from the edges. He then made another, smaller cubic box (edge length maybe three or four inches), which he filled with shredded paper and in which he placed the egg. He attached the small box inside the larger frame on all eight corners by rubber bands (which ended up moderately stretched). The main benefit of this setup, other than being very effective at absorbing shock, is that it has a high cross-sectional area to mass ratio, and tends to trap air inside the edge creases of the frame. While by no means a parachute, you'll find that this apparatus will fall fairly slowly.
Good luck on your project.
