Brackly Hall: Still Stuck on Cogwheel and Sphinx

Hey guys,

The hints that pippin gave kind of helped....but I'm still stuck on what to do with the cogwheel or how to get the combo lock opened for the sphinx....I thought that the message about plague and birds came from a statue or something with a plaque on it, in the maze, but I couldn't find it there.

So as of now, I still don't know what to do with the cogwheel or how to get the combo lock opened. I've walked around the maze and the house at least a few times now.
