Just a side note here about FQ2. FQ2 is a parody of the first FQ game, which was originally written in 1991 when I was 17 years old and hadn't completely developed my game design skills. Because of that, things like the "see a monster and figure out how to kill it and get past it" motif was very deliberate -- I was making fun of myself and the quaint artificiality of the world created in the original FQ. Read between the lines in FQ2, and it should be evident the whole game is making fun of myself, right down to the exaggerated recycling of some of the FQ jokes.
Not that I have anything but the utmost respect for your judgment of Perils of Akumos being the best game. It's fantastic.
