For me, a sure bet is to go to my laundromat and see how many quarters I can find that were left in a washer or dryer. > > I need to get a life!
It's amazing how careless people are with change. When my wife is grocery shopping, I usually go out and walk around a few blocks for exercise. I usually find coins on the sidewalk or in parking lots. I average less than 20 cents per walk, but sometimes it's almost a dollar. The most common coin is of course a penny, but I find lots of quarters. There isn't much folding money out there.
Another thing is tools. People leave them laying around under the hood of their car when they are working on it, and they fall off an slide over against the curb. I find pliers, wrenches, screw drivers and sometimes special tools like a little gadget that is used to remove shoe molding when installing carpet.
I also perform my civic duty by getting nails and screws out of the roadway, but I only do that if I don't have to risk my life. There are a lot of people out there who didn't have a flat because I picked up a nail. And they don't even know it. Howard
