When they resurfaced the traffic circle near my home town a few years ago, they deliberately left off painting any lane stripes. It sounds crazy, but I understand it is supposed to be safer--and it is *much* easier to drive than it used to be when it had lanes. You can just sort of ooooze over to where you need to be--left, right, or center--with out having to get there all in one move, like you would making a lane change.
