Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. No new question yet.
The term "food memory" has a slightly different meaning to me. I found out I was slightly diabetic a little over two years ago. I control it by not eating the things I like best. If it didn't work so well, I couldn't stand it, because of my . . . food memory.

Yes, I remember the days when I ate desserts, all kinds of bread, pasta, and more desserts. Did I mention candy? I never ate or drank anything with artificial sweeteners.

I can eat a few things that are not great for diabetics, but only in moderation. Potatoes, tortillas, macaroni, white rice, and white bread are OK in moderation, but whole wheat bread, brown tortillas, and whole wheat pasta are better. I have always loved rice, and I find that brown rice is excellent and has only a slight difference in flavor.

I am supposed to avoid sugar and limit carbohydrates. You have no idea how much that messes up cruise ship food! Sugar free desserts are not very good unless prepared at home. I've gotten good "no sugar added" ice cream, but that doesn't mean it's sugar free. Some places provide sugar free banana pudding which is not bad.

And food can be really sneaky. Barbeque sauce is often loaded with sugar as it the slaw that makes a barbeque sandwich good. Some southern cooks slip a little sugar into vegetables, particularly creamed corn. The natural sugar in corn is OK, but the refined sugar they put in it is poison to diabetics.

Avoiding sugar takes all the fun out of vacationing in New Hampshire and Vermont, and I may never go back to Hershey, Pennsylvania, but I still have my food memories from earlier visits.
