I'm neither knowledgeable nor a cinephile, but I did see "Open Water".
In a way, it did seem to stretch a tiny amount of story over a large number of minutes. But mostly I didn't mind that, because the situation the characters were in made me really tense. So at least I wasn't sitting there bored. (Instead, I was sitting there with my stomach in knots, imagining myself out in the ocean about to be eaten by sharks. I never said I was brave, folks.)
And I liked a lot of the dialog, as the two people passed blame back and forth as a sort of emotional reflex action, the emptiness and futility of which made the whole thing even more bitter.
"Open Water" was good for one viewing, though it's probably not a movie I'll ever want to rent again. Too many scary sharks!
