Because if it did, my head would explode.
I mean, I normally only see one movie a month or so. And there aren't any other movies this fall that I'll bother to see in the theaters (unless my friends go to Zorro, then I'll probably go along). Certainly there aren't any other movies I'd care about going to opening weekend. So if they put them both in the same weekend, my fragile little brain wouldn't be able to handle it. I'd be caught in a vortex of indecision and die.
Then I'd go see Narnia... but it would still be painful. I'm much happier to have them spread out.
Besides, why would either studio want to compete for the same weekend, which would certainly hurt them both no matter who won?
