On the way back from Lascassas today, we stopped off at the Cumberland County Playhouse in Crossville, Tennessee to see a production of "Ain't Misbehavin'," which is billed as "The Fats Waller Musical Show." As expected it was excellent.
The all-black cast of five was a very tallented group of people. They included a big guy, a little guy, two short chubby ladies and a tall (very tall) slender lady, and they sang and danced all over the stage. These people were professionals. I know the Playhouse is sometimes referred to as "little theatre" but actors like that don't just walk in off the street.
After all these years of going to plays at CCP, I can still say that I have never seen anything that I couldn't call excellent.
This one was done in their "Adventure Theatre" which is sort of a 3-sided theatre in the round. That format allows for a minimal set on one side and the rest is seating. We were on one side in the front row.
I remembered some of the songs from a long time ago. When was the last time you heard the Mills Brothers sing, "I'm Going to sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter?" Or "Two Sleepy People?"
They also did a classy number called, "Your Feet's Too Big." Yes, I remember that one.
I'm a sucker for a fast-paced musical, and that one was right down my alley. Howard
