Most busy intersections where two streets cross at right angles, in a relatively flat area, with good visibility, do very well with just a traffic light. It helps if it is one of those computer controlled lights with sensors to help keep track of traffic."
At a four-way intersection (well the fourth actually goes into the school, so I guess a three-way intersection) for my school, we have stop signs, which is the worst idea anyone ever had before. The intersection's in the residential area, which is why there is a stop sign instead of a traffic light, I guess, but still... It's a huge mess, and people who are in the "turn left only" lane end up going forward to end up in the school parking lot. It aso doesn't regulate the flow of traffic, and everyone's confused about who goes when, especially when the students are acting as mindless pedestrians (they don't look to see where the cars are and just *walk*). Plus, it makes everything slower than a traffic light (like at my old school) would. Sure, there'd still be a traffic jam, but at least it's not a jam that goes stop-jerk-stop-jerk all the time.
