The unseen television gods settled the problem. They did away with the talk-talk-talk segment at the beginning of the race broadcast. There was a moment of talk-talk-talk about football after the game and then they switch to the race. As luck would have it, the cars were coming out of turn four and the pace car was diving into the pits. Then the green flag waved and they were off.

From the end of the actual football game to the actual beginning of the of the race was maybe five or ten minutes max. They barely had time to show one smiling coach and one grim coach before the switch was made.

I thought it was going to be Heidi all over again.

As it turned out, it was a terrible race. After about 20 laps somebody blew a tire and hit the wall. Then after another 20 laps, somebody else blew a tire and hit the wall. Then another 20 laps went by and another car blew a tire and hit the wall. 20 laps later, another tire blew, causing the car to hit the wall, and then (surprise!) a blown tire caused another car to hit the wall.

By that time, the race was half over and a bunch of wrecked cars were in the infield garage, but the same stuff continued until about midnight when one of the few cars still running won the race. Most of the blown tires were right front tires, which normally take a beating as the cars turn left.

So why did this happen? The story is that the track has been smoothed out by a grinding process, and that made the drivers able to run faster. The faster they go, the hotter the tires get and "that ain't good fur a tar."
