So he wrote a report that started out as the conventional story and then veered off into the fanciful world of, well, maybe not burning sharks but close. He got a good grade on it.

I never wrote book reports that drifted into nonsense, but I once wrote a picture report of a picture I had drawn myself, which I even admitted in the report. It was accepted, but I don't remember my grade.
