I had a friend who did that in science in ninth grade. The essay was supposed to be on whatever scientific topic we were studying, and she started writing about the Backstreet Boys. She got an A. (We wouldn't have tried it with ANY teacher but that one, though. He had to be the least dedicated teacher in the universe.)
