Besides, it makes more sense to have pitchfork-wielding peasant armies if there's actually a _need_ for pitchforks. Not that pitchfork-wielding peasant armies are incredibly realistic either, yet I come across those all the time.

I mean, yeah, peasants _were_ used as cannon fodder (or knight fodder, in lieu of cannon), but at least they were nice enough to give them spears to die holding.
