Well, of course nothing happened. If you go to Vominus Dining Hall and don't buy and eat food, what else are you going to do? (Make sure it's Vominus! There's another dining hall on campus, but it's closed.)
If you can't keep the food down, you've got an appetizer in your inventory that might help you out.
(Note: I don't know if you have to catch the rat on Saturday, because I did not pick that subject. If you don't even have the option to buy food at Vominus, then I think you need to catch the rat before you can progress to Saturday evening.)
