1914. I'm old but not that old. I think the first time I ever heard of the Houston Ship Channel was after World War II. Maybe, because it was "new" to me, I remembered it as being new in that time period. There are a lot of cobwebs back there in my brain and sometimes they cloud the memories a little.

About a hundred years ago, give or take a few decades, there was a big push to build canals and harbors, and to widen and deepen shipping channels. Ships were getting larger and required deeper and wider channels. The Panama Canal dates from that period.
