Katrina caused the loss of eight (!) oil refineries. A bunch of the pipelines that port petroleum are also severely slowed due to the damage.

Pretty much everywhere east of the Rockies is, apparently, very dependent on those refineries. There's gas shortage in some places, and in others there's no shortage, just no way to get what gas that's available there.

It's been recommended not to drive anywhere unless absolutely necessary, and don't top off constantly -- wait until you need gas. Otherwise things are just going to get worse.
