You're on the right track, but you haven't quite figured out the
next step. That cavern lets you out on the other side of the
mountains, but the giraffe doesn't know that.
See, every time you approach the valley the normal way, the
giraffe is ready and waiting for you. HOWEVER, if he's poking his
nose into that northern cavern when you're coming from the
east...
