In order to gain the skills necessary to get the focus stone, you need to make use of that sword and visit the third world. There's a wise man whose understanding of the power of belief will open up many options for you. Then go home and see if you can't pick up something new.
(For sanity's sake: after you kill the wraith, go north. NOT EAST. You will have to go that way later, but the creature guarding the east path will drive you crazy.)
