Just a little history

My son and grandson collect antique military rifles. Last night they walked in with an M1 rifle that they had bought. It was manufactured in Springfield, Mass. in 1942 and it was in remarkable condition.

My grandson remembered stories that I told him about those rifles which were still being issued when I was in the Army. I told him that at one time I could field strip that weapon in 30 seconds, and he wanted me to prove it.

It has been nearly 50 years, but it all came back to me. My time was not quite that good, but good enough. He allowed me an extra minute because of my age. After I reassembled it he asked me if I could still do a manual of arms, and so I had to try. I'm sure it lacked the crispness that I had in my youth, but I did right sholder arms and present arms for him. (An M1 weighs about 9.5 pounds.) Then I showed him how to open the bolt during inspection and then close it again without losing a thumb. He was impressed, and I was amazed at how much I remembered.

It would be nice if all weapons could become historical collector's items or museum antiques, but I guess it will never happen. I have looked at foreign made rifles in their collection and and none from that period come close to the quality of the American made M1. It is trouble free, reliable and can put eight holes in a paper plate at 500 yards. I'm glad I never had to shoot one at people.
