Dear Ciaran,
*Slices off a big piece of encouragement and passes it over*
So you've made your decision! This sounds like a great program that allows you to serve others and develop your skills too. The sticking points seem to be 1) telling your parents and 2) raising the money. I don't think either sticking point would be too big for God to handle, if this is what He wants you to do :-)
*have some whipped cream with that encouragement*
Raising the money seems to be everyone's least favorite part of any mission or internship project. Usually the organization you're associated with can help you draft leters requesting support that are sent to friends and church members, and suggest other fundraising ideas. Yes, it is uncomfortable, but quite a test of stepping out in your faith!
*adding some chocolate sprinkles*
As far as your parents go, if I were a parent (hey! I *am* a parent!) I would rather see my child doing something constructive like this, using their talents, than sitting home collecting unemployment. But yes, if I were not of the same faith, I would be asking money/what are you doing with your life? type questions too. You sound prepared to answer.
I didn't quite catch if you are expecting your parents to contribute or not; I would suggest not going into any conversation with them about this with the assumption that they would help. I *would* go into the conversation assuming that they do have your best interests at heart and that any argument they may give is coming from that place. You just have to let them know, respectfuly, the decision is ultimately yours as an adult.
*adds a cherry on top*
I know you already have all this figured out.. ...but if you needed to hear it again, there it is :-)
Please let us know how it goes. Love, koalamom
