Ca-RIB-be-un

Maybe I'm not the only one watching those Caribbean news stories. Anyway I looked all over the answers to that poll for "both" but soon realized that the word has more pronounciations than New Orleans.

If it's the name of Royal Caribbean cruise line, it's as above in the subject line. But I still say Ca-ri-BE-an sometimes when speaking of the sea. The locals tend to drill the r, Spanish style. Car-IB-be-an doesn't quite work for me.

Once on Haiti, a native corrected me because I didn't wear out the R just right, but after several tries I got a big Haitian grin, and, "You OK, mon!" Mostly, they don't care how you say it, just bring money.
