By doing some careful maneuvering *around* the room, you can maneuver those three reds such that you have a clear path to the portal without fighting any of them at all. Try playing around with it a bit. Sometimes it takes some moving back and forth before they move in the right direction.

I would try what I suggested above first, but after that, don't be too concerned about hitting checkpoints that you have no choice about. Conserving checkpoints only works when you have a choice in the matter.
