Well, you can't do anything with the chuck hole because it's simply there to annoy you. :) The purpose of the platform will become clear when you cross the bog.
Unfortunately, you need to buy the means to cross the bog.
The soothsayer's advice was actually relevant: she told you to "read everything twice." (Wasn't there something you had to read to score a gold coin?)
