Quite simple. First, I'm a morning person. I don't mean this in the sense that I always wake up early and am chipper and annoying to all those around me; rather, I mean that I am far more energetic and productive in the mornings than I am in the afternoons. (1 pm to about 7 pm are nearly write-off hours for me on a bad day.)

Problem is, I also like to stay up late at night. Generally, I either sleep in until 10 am (on weekends) or until a combination of alarm clock and willpower force me out of bed to get ready for work. On the weekends, I usually get woken up by the light or the heat (during the summer, at least) so I'm still not getting as much sleep as I want to.

If I wake up for no reason at 5 am, it generally means that my body feels rested enough to just wake up -- almost never happens, but when it does it means I'm up much earlier, wide awake, and right at the start of my productive hours of the day. On a weekday, waking up at 5 am means I'll be taking time to make a really nice breakfast, or going to work out before work. On a weekend, it means that I've added five very productive hours to my day -- when you consider that my bad hours start at 1 pm and I'm often up at 10 am, the increase from 3 hours to 8 hours is huge.

OK, so maybe that wasn't so simple but the fact remains that waking up at 5 am for no reason is the start of a VERY good day for me.
