Good on ya for refusing to be intimidated.

I flew to Boston-Logan about a month after 9/11 - the airport where two of the 9/11 planes took off. I wasn't about to rearrange my whole weekend because the rest of the country was afraid of flying.

My flight was worse than practically deserted - it was cancelled. To make matters worse, it was cancelled 6 days before the departure date, and I wouldn't have gotten the 7 day advance booking rate for a replacement flight with another airline. I spent a good while on the phone with a customer service rep until they agreed to book me on another airline at their expense.
