There isn't much difference between a model horse show and an antique motor scooter show. That may sound outrageous, but a lot of the elements must be the same. People bring in their handiwork, dust, clean, and arrange for display. Then a bunch of serious looking people called judges examine the entries, confer, discuss and hopefully agree. Awards are given and the contestants are sometimes happy, or sometimes disappointed. Everybody goes home thinking about next year.
It makes no difference if you are talking about tiny little horses, real horses, framed art, antique motor scooters, gigantic pumpkins, fancy dogs, street rods, antique tractors, canned peaches, pies, or whatever. Certain elements of competition will be there. The judges take their job seriously, and prizes are accepted with glee. The losers scowl a bit.
I'm sure the people look different. I don't know what sterotypes apply at tiny little horse shows, but scooter people tend to be an older crowd. Antique tractor people include more family groups and you see a lot of overalls. Street rodders are predominately middle aged males, and the peaches and pies are usually entered into competition by ladies.
It's also a social event. There a people that you have not seen since the last show, and you will probably look forward to seeing them again at the next one. You laugh and talk and go out to eat together.
People who never enter such competitions are losing out on one of the fun things in life. Howard
