Giraffe and pitch black cavern

Right so I have onions, sack, small coin, silver key, crown, ring, tap, bucket, opener, cross, coconut, pliers, iron support, red and green potions, sword, rusty key, goo.

I just keep hitting random directions until I emerge one side or the other (I've tried to map, but I just get lost - even using 2 blocks of 3!). Do I just have to persist with the giraffe in taunting him? Am I supposed to find a useful item in the cavern?

Any help in the right direction would be gratefully received!!!
