Kepler, among other things, is a cheapskate and will not pay out the money to have adequate medical transport to get injured personnel off of Akumos. Obviously, they got him out of the mines, but in his condition, he couldn't be transported offplanet.

That leaves only ONE BUILDING on Akumos where they could have stashed the poor guy.

Once that's done, there's a bat/bug infested rock formation in the mines that's just begging to be bashed to pieces...
