What do you mean by "from the two portal location"? The only spot that has two portals next to each other has four different ways to go from it. West, of course, leads back to the start of the level. East is a dead-end.

I'm assuming you're saying that going south puts you where there are too many monsters to handle. You are correct. So go north instead and clear out what you can up there. By the time you finish all that, you should be a lot more powerful and more readily able to attack the south. There's one segment on the north side that requires you to plow through quite a few reds before you get to a checkpoint, but keep trying, and you'll make it. Once the north side is clear, the south won't be very difficult.
