Have you noticed that JUST BEFORE you get the giraffe's
attention, you have the option to go NORTH instead of further
west into the valley?

Go away from the valley for a while, give the giraffe time to calm
down and retreat and then start to the west again. When you
have the option, head north; you will find a very useful but
annoying alternate way into the valley.

Just remember the rule of thumb of mapping out rooms in pitch
darkness - if you move in a direction and DON'T bump into a
wall, you've walked into a new room. :)
