Could Satchel Paige have been wrong when he said, "Never look back?" I really enjoyed your look back. I did the same thing a couple of years ago, and I also had to cringe at my own immaturity. I can't even remember how far back I go, but it was well before the turn of the century.

I can't remember any stress when I went for a driver's license, but that was 1949. I do remember commenting to my mother a couple of weeks later that I didn't need a billfold any more, because I didn't have any money. My driver's license was useless because I didn't have a car, and my social security card was useless, because I didn't have a job. So, I said, who needs a billfold to carry around a bunch of useless paper? I guess she thought I was kidding, because she laughed her head off.

I guess driver's licenses are made of plastic now, but then it was paper and cost $2.

There was no stress when I started college. All I had to worry about was that I only had $140, and if I had to drop out I would be drafted. And then there was that little matter about how I coasted through high school and never studied. I didn't have a car or even a bicycle and I was 32 miles from home cooking. Worse, I didn't have any income and my parents were having financial troubles and couldn't help. No stress at all.

Dolls are OK to collect, but what kind of nut collects motor scooters? I hate to think how many of my posts mention scooters. It's a wonder Sam ever put up with that.

Maybe old Satchel was wrong about you, and right about me.
