And there is another problem with those labels. They work fine, within the context of this country. However, if you are addressing someone who is an alien or you are outside of the states yourself you can't use those problematic tags anymore. I've heard of people getting really upset because someone called them "African-American", not because it had negative connotation but because the ignorant person who called them that failed to recognize the fact that they weren't American in the first place. Personally, I wish that the "*place of origin*-American" titles were still reserved for people who originate for another country and have aquired their United States citizenship. If you were born here then you really have no claim to another place any longer. Or at least I think more people should view it that way. When we get to that point, I think we'll be one step closer to racial harmony in this country.
